On September 3, 2024, the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) hosted a dialogue meeting with European legislators in Shanghai, with the theme of “Contributing to Deepening the China-EU Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”. Yang Wanming, President of CPAFFC and Esther Gil, third deputy speaker of the House of Representatives of Spain, attended the event and delivered opening remarks. Approximately 100 representatives from Chinese and European legislative bodies, as well as think tanks, universities, and the business community participated in the 2024 Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges. President Yang emphasized that China-EU relations are crucial for the welfare of both peoples and for global peace and development. He pointed out that the purpose of this dialogue meeting, held as part of the 2024 Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges, was to exchange views on how to develop sound and stable China-EU relations in the new global context, build consensus, enhance mutual trust, and promote cooperation. Yang highlighted the current international landscape, marked by instability and complex challenges, and stressed the importance of China and Europe working together. He called for a correct understanding of the China-EU relationship, the need to maintain its proper positioning, and an adherence to principles of openness and mutual benefit. Yang also emphasized tightening the bonds of shared interests, deepening cultural exchanges, fostering mutual engagement between the peoples, and strengthening collaboration to address global challenges. This, he said, would help drive the continued development of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.

He noted the significance of both sides coordinating positions and actions on key global issues such as climate change, green transformation, and biodiversity. He expressed a strong desire for Europe and China to respect each other, build mutual trust, jointly uphold the international order based on international law, and promote peace, security, and prosperity globally.
Representatives from both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as developing a clear understanding, deepening cultural exchanges, and advancing pragmatic cooperation. There was a broad consensus that China-EU relations hold strategic significance and global influence. Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening communication, enhancing understanding, and ensuring the stability and longevity of China-EU relations, ultimately contributing to global peace and development.
